Updated: Oct 21, 2021

Is the body a complex machine and the brain a supercomputer, or does this explanation of what we are fall short? This episode of Physically Spiritual explores the intelligence of the body and how by harnessing its instincts, the body can become an ally on our journey to health and holiness.

Notes

Introduction to the Body and Soul - (Podcast) https://www.becominggift.com/post/the-story-of-a-body

The Resurrection of the Body - "The term 'flesh' refers to man in his state of weakness and mortality. The 'resurrection of the flesh' (the literal formulation of the Apostles' Creed) means not only that the immortal soul will live on after death, but that even our 'mortal body' will come to life again." Catechism of the Catholic Church, 990.

Where is the soul? “the whole soul is in each part of the body, by totality of perfection and of essence, but not by totality of power.” St. Thomas Aquinas, Summa Theologiae, I 76.8.

"Organic substances grow, heal, and self-organize."

Mind-Body Approach - Change the mind by changing the body; this is a “bottom-up” approach to change. A top-down approach starts with thoughts and beliefs.

"I would propose that our bodies are the same as Adam and Eve's before the fall with two exceptions: the loss of the preternatural gifts [..] and the effect of the accumulation of sin in time."

Sin and the Body - "As he passed by he saw a man blind from birth. His disciples asked him, 'Rabbi, who sinned, this man or his parents, that he was born blind?' Jesus answered, 'Neither he nor his parents sinned; it is so that the works of God might be made visible through him.'" John 9: 1 - 3.

Are health and holiness synonymous? "No, some elements of health are out of our complete control [...] sometimes God allows damage to happen to draw a greater good out of it."

"The body is like a GPS, and the destination is set to survival."

"Your body does not want to make you sin. [...] The ideas of sin, virtue, and vice do not have meaning to your body. Your body is solving for survival, and your instincts are interacting with the world in that way. [...] Some of these instincts are helpful [for holiness]."

"God does not come to obliterate our instincts and feelings; he comes to order them to our greater good."
